Every vintage tells a story, and with the Library Vertical, we’re sharing the first three chapters of Origin Bates Ranch. The uniqueness of the weather, terroir, and our own lessons learned in show themselves in each bottle.
The 2019 was where it all began. Our first harvest from 80-year-old vines on French rootstock was a perfect storm of good fortune—ideal weather, pristine clusters, and the guidance of our winemaker and early mentors. This inaugural wine set a bar that felt impossible to beat.
Then came 2020. We got a surprise opportunity to work with the elusive cabernet franc from Bates Ranch—eight precious rows that brought new depth and complexity. In a blind tasting, a group of winemakers unanimously chose 2020 over the debut vintage.
The 2021 vintage is a style all its own. The latest harvest we’ve ever had, with a long, cool growing season that created lower alcohol and flavors unlike anything we’d seen before. Elegant, restrained, and layered, it’s a wine that reveals itself slowly.
Each bottle in the Library Vertical is distinct, yet they all carry the unmistakable essence of Origin Bates Ranch. Open them side by side, and you’ll see the journey.
